Square Enix took the opportunity to drop a provocative tweet into the Dragon Quest fan community’s lap and ask which game in the long-running RPG is best for a newbie. The tweet was absolutely blasé in showing Sylvando–that flamboyant fan-favorite from Dragon Quest XI–alongside the text: “There are no wrong answers, but Sylvando might say otherwise…” And opinions really started flying.
The deluge of comments kept flowing in, from die-hard DQ genuises to complete casual gamers. Some said it was the classics that were the best introduction, while others went for the more contemporary entries. That’s a debate as old as the series itself, and Square Enix purposely stirred that pot.
So what’s an answer? There really isn’t, though a handful of games did keep getting mentioned. Hands down, the latest mainline DQ, which is lauded for its accessibility and slick gameplay. “Literally the one you’re promoting in the picture,” one player sarcastically commented, poking fun at the irony while making a nod to Square Enix’s own marketing. Then there were those loyal to Dragon Quest VIII, calling it a masterpiece with one of the best soundtracks ever. “DQ8 worldmap music is magical,” one fan gushed.
The dark horse is really the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake, which is mentioned from time to time. Players noted that it perfectly balanced old-school charm with modern visuals. Then there is the argument from spin-offs; some say that depending on what sort of games they usually enjoy, Dragon Quest Builders or Monsters could be better introductions. “If you’re into Pokémon, go DQ Monsters. If you’re into Minecraft, go DQ Builders,” a helpful fan clarified.
But of course, not every answer for another game was dead serious. “Final Fantasy IX (2000),” one joker responded, clearly trying to stir some responses. Another one asked Square Enix to “update the mobile Trials of Mana instead because why not?”
The real takeaway? Dragon Quest has something for everybody, whether you’re looking for deep RPG mechanics, weird characters, or just a comfortable world to lose yourself in. And with whispers of Dragon Quest XII behind the shadow, the time to get in is prime. But seriously, don’t ask Sylvando-he’ll likely say to start with whichever one has the most fabulous costumes.
