Epic Games just gave us a really big drop: A major upgrade to visual and performance for Fortnite is coming with the day-one launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. The tweet read: “Order up! Redefined visuals, upgraded performance @ 60fps, same Fortnite. Supercharged for day one launch on Nintendo Switch 2!” This set the players into an outrageous buzz. And indeed, it should. The original port was pretty much not working well performance-wise, so this upgrade is very much appreciated by portable Fortnite fans.
Still, I wanted to give you the rundown on what it actually means. The biggest selling point has to be that it will run at 60 FPS, something the Switch players have been demanding since the day Fortnite arrived at the Switch. The original was trapped at 30 FPS-and sideways serious-the gameplay felt like slow-motion compared to almost all other platforms. Now, with the beefy hardware on the Switch 2, Epic is promising smoother gameplay, sharper visuals, and hopefully zero frame drops during insane build battles.
These replies are a perfect amalgamation of hype, skepticism, and utter chaos. One player, @Rifty2003, joked, “510$ for 60fps☠️, we really are in the future people,” obviously referencing the rumored $510 price of the Switch 2. Meanwhile, @JuriForFortnite demanded a Juri Han skin, because why not? @Shunleoo almost shouted, “BRING BACK STREET FIGHTER! THAT’S ALL!!!!” Classic Fortnite community, never a dull moment.
Also up for debate are Nintendo collaborations. @Sureluck_holmes and @HeadhunterBoi are trading thoughts on whether we’ll actually see Nintendo characters like Samus in Fortnite. Spoiler: probably not. Nintendo is very protective of their IPs, and granting an opportunity for Link or Mario to wield a Scar is…unlikely; anybody can dream though.
Others, such as @JCrack02, decided to take the opportunity to speak up for the return of account merging, while @Hearts_Impact pointed fingers at Epic for neglecting Save the World mode. “People like co-op tower defense,” they said, and well, they’re not wrong.
And there is that thing everyone is talking about: the Nintendo Switch 2. Even though Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed any such console exists, the leaks and rumors have been swirling for months. A Fortnite day-one launch sounds like Switch 2 is at the cusp of realization, and if it even remotely checks the 60 FPS Fortnite box, then it has got to be pretty powerful.
So what now? The official Switch 2 reveal has all of us awaiting, with almost equal disappointment about Metroid Prime 4. But for now, the Fortnite players can look ahead to smoother and prettier experiences while being on the go. And maybe the good folks at Epic will sweeten the deal with a surprise collaboration. (I’m eyeing you, Juri Han advocates.)
Until then, keep those hopes tempered, stay tuned for more updates, and possibly start stashing some money for the Switch 2. Because 60 FPS Fortnite? It’s really worth all the hype in the world.
