PlayStation treated us to a hands-on report and developer interview about Rematch, a title that really capitalizes on skill-based gameplay in an upcoming football game. The game will see the light of the day on June 19 and brings a fresh viewpoint to the sports genre-where aim and precision are considered for who gets to score. The hype is there already.

The tweet from PlayStation linked to a long-form Take of how Rematch mixes fast-paced street football with deep mechanics. Getting a little bit technical here. Unlike mainstream football sims, the game is a true test of personal skill: timing, e.g., positioning, and actually aiming for the shot. Less FIFA, more high-speed arcade with a competitive edge.

Reaction from players is very much all over the place. Some, like @HighKeyApe, are pumped about the whole thing, saying, “Finally, a sports game where aim actually matters.” Then others like @ControllerGuard stand on the other end of the scale: “Absolutely hooked.” @Art_inPlay hopes that Rematch wastes them for too many hours just like Sifu’s DLC.

Not everybody is sold on the thing. It’s “another copy of Captain Tsubasa,” according to @KaitoMelt while @Skippy_Tielle just said: “No one cares.” Ouch. Then, there’s @marioguy560, who had to question if the promo image for the game was AI-created. (Spoiler alert: Probably not.)

The one reply that stood out? From @RematchUnited, who hyped the actual competitive scene of the game with upcoming tournaments, stat-tracked seasons, and even an All-Star game. If that is not a testament that this game is built for the long haul, nothing else will be.

Following that, some of the back-and-forth began to spiral into madness. @kirabiraXO was flexing with 20% yields on the stablecoin, while @Blkeddie412_ straight-up demanded GTA 6. Priorities, guys.

One thing is for sure: Rematch is shaping into a love-it-or-hate-it kind of game. A couple of weeks will show if this game manages to live up to the hype or if it would end up being termed ‘also-ran’ in football games. Meanwhile, some number of players were enchanted through the beta, so don’t be shocked if this one really sets off.

Well, at the very least, it sure is not another battle royale.
