Rare has dropped a fresh batch of information on Sea of Thieves, and the community is definitely not throwing down confetti. The big reveal was Pirate Profiles, a feature coming soon to the Pirate Emporium. Instead of a prize-worthy jig, the player base are flooding the replies with frustration and confusion and many “WHY??”.
So where’s the catch? Under Pirate Profiles, you can set up multiple pirate identities for a single account, sort of like alt characters for an MMO. But here is where it gets interesting: there is no progress from one to the other. So if you want to have the Shrouded Ghost title on a second pirate, you’ve got to grind and grind some more for it. And not to mention that it is a premium feature. So cover me with Ancient Coins.
Let there be fireworks. Players like JC Bailey (@ThatJCBailey) didn’t mince words: “Literally zero social media platforms advocate for this premium feature. Whomever suggested it to the dev team is disconnected from the community.” Others, such as @oldgoldsot, declared the obvious: “People can make an alt account for free. WE BEEN ASKING FOR LOADOUT PRESETS.”
This was, of course, the real kick. The community had been asking for simple QoL stuff for years: save outfit loadouts, favorite weapon skins, a bit more variety in cosmetics. Then, what do they get? A wholly useless feature that hardly anyone asked for. @Dallassavage09 provides a perfect retort: “This game is all about cosmetics. I just want more cosmetics of each item. Please!”
Even those who want the concept of many pirates hate the implementation. @majesticxsloth tweeted, “I would pay for multiple pirate skins to choose from on my main account, but I don’t see the point in paying for an alt account if progress doesn’t carry over.” Others were also throwing in ideas from compromise: “It should be another skin for our pirate, not an alt account.”
The dread of repeated FOMO washes over with slight influence. @Jack__Grimm asked the terrifying question: “If I have a separate Pirate Profile, does that mean I have to do limited events multiple times to ensure each pirate unlocks the cosmetics?” Grind the same event twice. Or thrice, even! The horror!
Meanwhile, others are just straight-up confused. @RobinIArgh cracked: “Wtf is the point of pirate profiles? People already make new accounts to cheat 🤣🤣” And @MutinousMel? Total traitors: “Of course not! UGH, TRAITORS!”
Rare’s update also teased changes to Reaper’s Chests, but let’s be honest-no one’s talking about that. The Pirate Profiles drama is sucking up all the thunder. Does Rare backtrack? Add shared progression? Or just plow into it, hoping the players will come around?
One thing is for sure: The community’s patience is thinner than a Skeleton Captain’s with kegs. And if Rare doesn’t start listening to the things people have been asking for—loadouts, cosmetics, not grinding the same curses twice—they’re going to start walking the plank of player goodwill.
Until then, the seas are stormy, and hype for this update is sinking faster than a sloop with holes. Yo ho ho… with a bottle of nope.
