A successful and, frankly, profitable fighting game in today’s market: news of SF6 selling over five million copies was announced by the company on Twitter, thanking the players on the second anniversary of the game. It is apparent that the community is rather …disappointed, whereas the devs keep popping bottles, toasting to this success.

Let us talk numbers: 5 million is huge when you remember that it took Street Fighter 5 four years only to reach 4 million. With SF6, this number is hit in two years. That is one giant leap, and it speaks of how the franchise has grown immense. Some had drawn comparisons to Mortal Kombat 1, claiming that it would have crossed that mark within mere five months of its post-release. But hey: The strength of SF6 is enough; that is all that matters.

Now here come the controversies in the replies. Damn, gamers were full of opinions. Some would celebrate: “LET’S GOOOOOOO,” calling it the best fighting game ever. Some others, well…had requests. Lots of ’em.

The biggest theme? Fortnite skins. Yeah, apparently, there have been crossover skins for Street Fighter in Fortnite before, and the players are begging for the return of those. “We want Street Fighter back to Fortnite pls 😭🙏,” one tweet said. Another stated, “Another great way to celebrate this momentous occasion would be bringing back the Street Fighter skins to Fortnite.” Capcom, are you listening? The people need Ryu in Fortnite.

Then there were character requests. Classic fighters were being called out too: Sakura (“Please we want SAKURA 😍💯💯💯💯”), while more wildcards were cast, like Mike Haggar from Final Fight. That would actually be bittersweet news, but let’s not forget there was also a guy who said, “Give us Darkstalkers 4 and you’ll get triple the sales.” Bold move, but we’d take it.

Of course, a lot of praise was thrown around, too. Some players praised the mechanics, mainly the Modern Controls option, which made the game much more accessible. “It’s really because y’all gave us modern controls,” one player tweeted. “The others would’ve sold more too with modern controls.” Good point; any approach that reduced a barrier to entry helped.

There, however, were some critiques voiced. Someone complained that throw loops are too strong (“Throws are too strong sort it out”). Another comment was: “5 million units ➡️ 5 characters per season pass. 4 is just way way too little content per year” (5 million units refers to copies of the game sold). Right? Maybe? I mean, at least it’s selling enough to have more seasons.

And just like that, they switch topics away from the game—like the guy who made a custom SF6-themed…something (link broken so we’ll never know). Or the Steam chart discussion, about whether it even matters to SF6 at all (consensus is bad: No, not really).

Players are all positive and placed “excellent,” “fantastic,” and “best since SF2 Turbo,” which all leads to a promise of another season of updates, so it means we have just started.

So, hats off to you, Capcom! Well done. Now about those Fortnite skins…
