Nintendo of America managed to put out a wildly funny and bizarrely specific tweet about one of the Skells in Xenoblade Chronicles X, with “to scale” scribbled on it, immediately going on the important disclaimer that this is not an official method of measurement. The image, with the giant mech towering over… something, sent the players into a frenzy of jokes, demands, and outright bafflement. At least, you would’ve known by now that the replies went downhill quickly, as they usually do.
So, the Skell. For those who hadn’t played Xenoblade Chronicles X (and let’s be honest here: a great number of Switch-only players haven’t got around to it yet, because, well, it’s still hanging out on the Wii U), these are giant custom-made mechs that let you gallivant around the open world with style. They’re really the coolest things ever since sliced bread-if sliced bread could fly and shoot lasers. Nintendo’s tweet was a cheeky jab toward the fans, but the internet kind of took the joke and made approximately 50 different interpretations.
The replies? Funny indeed. The moment the conversation started drifting toward a Switch port because Xenoblade Chronicles X is really one of the few gems on Wii U that are still stranded on that sinking ship, players, and users, began to make demands. Another demanded, actually outright, “Are you gonna patent mechs now?” and I thought that was a reasonable question.
In all honesty, the dominating factor looked like Switch 2. Oh boy, the Switch 2 upgrade request started to pour in. “Switch 2 upgrades on all Xenoblade games please,” one of the players tweeted, serenely followed by, “60fps patch for Switch 2 please 🙏.” Mention Xenoblade X to Nintendo and apparently it’s a bat signal for upgrade requests. Of course, the classic now followed…”Now measure it next to a banana.”
Wildcards next: “Nintendo posting ROBO dong is crazy,” barked one player, basically “Mood.” Another cracked a Pikmin 1 manual reference, which was… oddly specific but charming in its own way? Then gets thrown back into “I already broke my Skell, can you give me another?” because… same, dude; same.
One of the funniest parts was some people insisting that this was a stealth announcement for something much bigger. “There already is a port for the Switch. Why do you think they are advertising it?” scoffed one guy, with another throwing back at him with a link to a two-year-old rumor. The desperation is real, people.
Then, there were those who took the chance to bombard Nintendo with entirely separate questions, like “how’s it poppin?” and “Any update for Switch 2?” because, you know, why not shoot your shot?
Really, though, this was probably just Nintendo having a little fun with a cult classic. But the backlash just goes to show that the one thing that remains a surety is that Xenoblade Chronicles X still boasts a dedicated fanbase throwing in subpoenas for a proper release. Whether that happens on the Switch or Switch 2 (or never, because Nintendo really knows how to torture us) remains to be seen. For now, we just have to settle for memes, demands, and banana-based measurement requests.
